"Theatre of the Oppressed" (TO) is a system of theatre making developed by Brazilian theatre master Augusto Boal. It is used by theatre practitioners and arts practitioners who want to work with the community, and also in school settings by drama and arts educators. Around the world, social and community workers have also used TO techniques in community development and intervention work.
TO is a system with great emphasis on dialectical and dialogical learning. Two of the most well-known tools of TO are Image Theatre and Forum Theatre. Image theatre is a technique with which participants use their body to express thoughts, emotions and imaginations. While forum theatre allows the audience onstage to replace actors and change the outcome of a play, turning passive spectators into proactive “spect-actors”.
