Calling all aspiring playwrights writing scripts in Chinese

In light of the lack of new Chinese scripts in the local theatre scene, Drama Box launched a new playwright series in 2007 under its training platform – Blanc Space. The company hopes to encourage more people to write and produce new scripts for staging. To date, we have successfully produced more than 17 original Chinese language scripts.

Q&A Session

Interested applicants should attend the Q&A session on 14 June to find out more about the series. Please email josephine@dramabox.org by 9 June to register. As seats are limited, participants are encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment.

Objective

With the experience gained from organising the last three series, Playwright Series IV will focus on providing playwrights writing scripts in Chinese, and residing in Singapore, with a platform to incubate their scripts and an opportunity to stage them.

Target Audience

Anyone who resides in Singapore, is writing scripts in Chinese and looking for an opportunity to stage it, regardless of nationality, age, gender and experience.

Selection criteria

Drama Box will invite established theatre directors/playwrights to form a selection panel. The panelists will select no more than 2 scripts from all submissions to develop for staging. They will look at the style and completeness/readiness of the script (for staging) as the main selection criteria.

Script Incubation

Selected writers have a year to improve and develop their scripts. One of the panelists will be the dramaturg to the playwright, providing feedback to the writers. Drama Box will also organise two public play reads to gather the response and feedback from the audience before the final staging.

Workshop

Drama Box will also invite renowned playwright/s from overseas to share their playwriting process. Selected writers must attend ALL workshops organised. Those not selected will also be invited to attend so as to better their writing skills in the hope that they can submit a more developed script for future playwright series.
