Theatre as Call and Response

A presentation by Kok Heng Leun

Chinese language theatre in Singapore has a long history of engagement with society and politics. Since the early 20th century, Chinese language theatre has been responding to the changing political and social landscape by producing works that depict the lives of the times, and in turn, these works are calls by the artists to the public to respond to.

This sharing will trace the history of such engagements and reflect on the role of artists as producers, public intellects, witness and animateurs.
