"…These are very real struggles that our elderly faces, feeling useless and a sense of attachment for their business over the years. The younger generation cannot feel it but after watching it, it helps us to empathise that there are another human being that deserves our respect and honour, and for us to see that there are good individual who can contribute. And the fact that this show can be put up is a proof to the characters themselves that things can be change in itself…"

- Audience's feedback on Tour'05 - Tomorrow

"Drama Box believes strongly in two things: indigenous work and community theatre. It is hard to find another theatre company in Singapore which shows so much concern and conviction for this piece of land."

- Dr Quah Sy Ren, theatre critic and academic

Drama Box strongly believes in using theatre to reach out to people. In 2005, we toured to different heartland estates as well as shopping centres; exploring issues ranging from Out-of-School-Youths, to HIV/AIDS, to Senior Citizens.

Drama Box's community presence in 2005 even led to The Straits Times Life! featuring a cover story on our Community Tours and its positive impact.

tour '06

Drama Box aims to do two community tours in April and November this year. Each tour will see us going to different housing estates, and community places in Singapore where audiences can watch our performances free-of-charge. We will perform in five different locations for each tour.

We will focus on different issues for each tour, and work with participants to create forum theatre performance. These participants may then perform in the performances, sometimes alongside with professional actors. There will also be public workshops exploring the issue at hand, and findings will feed into the research and creation process for the plays.

As always, audiences are encouraged to actively participate, and experience drama during the community performances.

previous community outreach

In 2000, Drama Box started our first community play, Lian Can Cook. This was followed in 2001 with a series of regular outdoor community plays in HDB estates, and we have since tackled various issues and topics such as SARS, discrimination faced by ex-drug addicts, domestic violence, parent-child relationships, education and retrenchment. In 2002, our community outreach extended to the radio as we collaborated with Mandarin radio station UFM1003, to produce Pulitzer Book, the world's first radio forum theatre.

We also conduct drama workshops and programmes with members of the community. In 2003, we worked with inmates from Selarang Park Drug Rehabilitative Centre, as well as led a group of youths from Singapore and Japan to Bangalore, India to work with young people there using drama.

All tours are open to the public and free of charge.
