NeNeMas' works include interactive plays for schools as well as workshops specially tailored for students, teachers and corporate clients using our unique methodology. Within a short 6-month period in 2004, we have reached more than 5000 students and 400 teachers through our plays and workshops.
In 2003 & 2004, our company was commissioned by Nexus (S21 committee) to bring a Theatre-In-Education piece, “The Garden” to secondary schools in Singapore. The piece was widely well-received & received great reviews from both teachers & students alike.
In 2005 using our informed pedagogy, NeNeMas created:
• a Forum Theatre piece & a special 2 hour workshop on the use of Theatre Techniques in National Education for the SAF NE event in October.
• a Forum Theatre piece, “Hello, Julie!” as our assembly programme on NAC-AEP on the theme of Civil Responsibility, reaching more than 10,000 students & 800 teachers.
• a full length Forum Theatre piece “Flies in My Ear” on the issue of Out-Of-School Youths. We employed three Out-Of-School Youths, taught them production work as well as collaboratively created a full length Forum Theatre piece & performed at 5 public locations to great feedback & response.
• Launched a year-long programme in partnership with Marine Parade Family Service Centre, working with teens from Assumption Vocational Institute & Geylang Serai Vocational Institute on different themes such as Family, Self-respect, Bullying, Activating Change from Within.
Taking away the common myth that National Education is a “boring” topic, we aim to use a uniquely interactive program that uses Drama-In-Education (D.I.E) methodology and focuses directly on how to teach National Education more creatively such that participants feel a deeper attachment to the country.
It is an in-depth learning programme where participants learn facilitation skills in a non-classroom and non-intimidating environment. Participants will also learn to look at situations from more than one perspective, involving creative and critical thinking, enabling them to be a better facilitator, when engaging their students.
This series of unique experiential programmes aim to equip National Education facilitators with basic Drama-In-Education skills, first through experiencing the workshop themselves and moving on to application of these skills.
Our experienced facilitators will demonstrate creatively how to employ powerful Theatre Games and enlightening images using Image Theatre to discuss & explore more creative ways to teach National Education with the Participants. Lastly, we will use Forum Theatre to source for more possibilities in the issue that we are discussing.
We will share with you how these techniques can be used to assist National Education facilitators to not only create basic interest in National Education for students, but also develop the students in their creative thinking skills, thus making learning National Education a fun experience.
Taught with a strong pedagogical aim, the participants will remain energized and highly motivated throughout the program. Participants will also get a chance to use their bodies to voice out their thoughts and opinions.
NeNeMas believes that bringing theatre into schools is not just an artistic experience. By adopting a pedagogical approach
to theatre work, experiential process will benefit both students and teachers. After five years of research and practicum,
we have developed a working pedagogy that is artistic, fun and educational.
We have shared our programme with more than 300 Chinese Language teachers in the National Institute of Education over the
last 3 years. Targeted as part of Chinese Language teachers' training curriculum, many teachers subsequently implemented
our works in their teachings to great effect.
As with all our workshops, this series of The Blind Men and the Elephant : a holistic approach to teaching Mandarin using
Drama workshops emphasises on experiential learning - self-motivated exploration and paying forward to the Community. This
series of unique experiential programmes aim to equip Chinese Language teachers with Drama-In-Education techniques
applicable in their daily classroom curriculum. It will make learning Chinese a humanistic experience, a shared adventure
between stakeholders: students and teachers.

THE MYTH:
Drama-In-Education (D.I.E) is about acting out a school text.
THE TRUTH:
Drama-In-Education (D.I.E) is a technique that uses drama to engage students in a creative environment for
self-motivational learning.
OUR BELIEFS:
- We believe that Language is a socio-cultural semiotics, deeply alive & connected to every living environment.
- We believe that Learning is most effective when participants are engaged in group work.
- We believe that TO KNOW is TO ACT.
- We believe that Drama creates an environment that engages students socially, culturally, politically and at all levels of the society.
- We believe that Dramatic learning stimulates interaction and communicative skills, which in turn creates a conducive environment for learning languages.
- We believe in a BODY-HEART-MIND approach: releasing the BODY, affecting the HEART and engaging the INTELLECT.
- We believe that problem posing/problem solving is an important tool in learning.
- We believe in eliminating monologues and creating creative dialogues in a classroom.
- We believe that moving from teaching to facilitating is important in creating dialogues in classrooms.
OUR HOPE:
To develop the students in their creative and critical thinking skills, using Mandarin as a medium of expression.

"Teachers must unveil opportunities for hope, regardless of the obstacles."
- Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of Hope
OBJECTIVE for Progressive Educators:
- To be tolerant, open, forthright and critical as teaching is not simply the transmission of knowledge concerning the object or the topic.
- To express respect for differences in ideas and perspectives.
- To teach so that students can learn to learn the "reason-for", the "why" of the object or the content.
- To challenge students with a regard to their certitudes so that they seek convincing arguments in defense of the why.
- To understand that the "perception of the why of the facts, leading us to transcend the narrow horizons of the neighbourhood or even the immediate geographical area, to gain global view of the reality."
GOAL of this workshop:
This workshop aims to bridge the final gap between Facilitators and their Students and how by empowering the students, the
Chinese Language teachers can teach less but the students will learn more.
TOOLS facilitated during this final installment:
- Art of Problem Posing
- Art of Stimulating Critical Thinking
- Art of Facilitation
