Shh… censorship: a forum theatre performance

To celebrate our 20th anniversary and to commemorate 10 years of work in Community Theatre, Drama Box is returning to the heartlands with yet another Forum Theatre performance. This time we will present a wordless piece that comprises of five short pieces, directed by Kok Heng Leun (Artistic Director of Drama Box), co-created with and performed by ARTivate, the youth wing of Drama Box, after having undergone five months of intensive training in Forum Theatre.

Using a symbolic set design, and featuring live music accompaniment by ARCN TEMPL, this performance will transcend language and racial barriers, leading its viewers in discovering the power of censorship, with the aim of creating awareness in the communities about how censorship affects their daily lives.

*Note: Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) denied Drama Box an outdoor performance license for the Forum Theatre performance just 3 weeks from the performance. Click to read our Positioning Statement.

Shh… voices of the community: an exhibition

There was an on-site exhibition documenting the decade-long journey behind Drama Box's community theatre productions. Through photos, artifacts and multimedia presentations, 10 years of work with and for the community are presented with insights into the research and methodologies. Audiences can witness the genesis of our community theatre, its key development and its eventual progression into what it is today, and reminisce the ways we engaged different segments of the community in dialogues.

Shh… breaking the silence: a forum theatre workshop

Combining Brazilian theatre legend Augusto Boal's "Theatre of the Oppressed" and David Diamond's "Theatre for Living" with a pedagogy that was developed through ten years of community theatre work by Drama Box, many of which involved using Forum Theatre as a tool to engage different segments of the community in dialogues, this workshop will introduce participants to the art of creating Forum Theatre, as well as the aesthetics behind Forum Theatre. Participants will also be taught also facilitation skills.
